En 1970, un homme, jeune encore (il a vingt-trois ans), fait de son corps le support et le sujet de son art. C'est l'époque du body art, de l'art corporel, qui constitue une des avant-gardes aux côtés des arts minimal et conceptuel, de fluxus, de l'hyperréalisme. En 2002, ce même homme, mûr désormais (il a cinquante-cinq ans), fait encore de son corps la matière de son art. Le Narcisse aux allures androgynes, que Jupiter eût aimé parce qu'il était beau (comme dans la Fable le dieu enleva Ganymède), est devenu Monsieur-tout-le-monde, portant âge et lunettes. On devine que cette histoire d'art nous offre une parabole, une peinture de la vie qui est, qui va (peinture confiée au premier chef à la photographie). Et l'on s'avise de ce que ce corps (et ses accessoires), troublant naguère, banal aujourd'hui, n'était, n'est pas tant le sujet du discours que son matériau complice. Souvenez-vous, Genevois, c'était en 1975. L'AMAM, l'Association pour un musée d'art moderne, de laquelle naîtra le Mamco, vingt ans plus tard, invitait à une performance au Musée d'art et d'histoire. Au fond de la grande salle, à main gauche en entrant, se dressait uniquement un immense buffet, somptueux et baroque comme un autel à gradins propre aux cérémonies mondaines. Immergé au coeur des canapés, petits fours et des fleurs, on repérait un cartel discret portant cette simple phrase: L'artiste est dans la cave. Certains des visiteurs-spectateurs finirent par le découvrir dans un recoin éloigné d'un sous-sol du «Grand musée» de la rue Charles-Galland. Urs Lüthi (né le 10 septembre 1947 à Kriens, LU), le visage encharbonné, pieds nus, affalé sur un couverture à même le sol, entouré d'un seau (pour quels besoins ?), d'une bouteille de champagne et d'une radio-transistor, attendait, silencieux. Les messages étaient et sont obvies: l'artiste se situe au tréfonds et en marge – de l'institution, de la société, des préoccupations communes. Et depuis cette date de 1975, les mots de la tribu humaine se sont enrichis de l'abréviation SDF. Présentement, Urs Lüthi place toute sa production sous une maxime anglo-saxonne (le nouveau latin !): Art is the better life. L'amateur d'art songera à ce qu'est une vie meilleure. Au cours des années 1980, l'artiste suisse, désormais installé à Munich, accomplit une inflexion de parcours qui l'éloigne du noir et blanc des photographies sur toile émulsionnée, des apparentes provocations et drôleries, de l'indistinction sexuelle et de l'autoportrait. C'est en fait la peinture, à l'acryl, de grand format, qui prend le relais. Manié avec le soin des vieux maîtres, le pinceau ajoute à l'ironie une certaine tendresse, voire du romantisme. Les titres des nus féminins pleins et sensuels parlent de tableaux pour un bar italien, de grands sentiments – et lorsque s'offre le jeu des vagues d'immenses marines, il s'agit du pur don de soi. Les architectures de motifs ornementaux, eux, déclarent des rêves échangés. Or, ce choix démonstratif du monde extérieur est presque toujours indexé sur le vocable d'autoportrait.

Pourtant, ce dernier, l'effigie directe d'Urs Lüthi, ne réapparaît qu'au tournant des années 1990, quand sa tête, chauve maintenant comme celle d'un scribe égyptien, moulée sur le vif et coulée dans le bronze, marque à la fois le passage du temps et le point nodal d'un rapport au monde dans lequel il s'inscrit tout entier. La dernière décennie du siècle sera pour l'essentiel celle de l'Ordre universel. Cet intitulé générique va couvrir un dialogue de formes et d'installations centrées sur la tête de bronze aux visages toujours renouvelés, parfois même remplacée par l'assemblage du muscle cardiaque et du cerveau, monté comme un buste sur un socle. Manière d'exprimer que le coeur et l'esprit s'unissent désormais sur un mode substantiel et vivace au sein du réseau intime et planétaire. Il n'est pas injustifié de croire qu'Urs Lüthi reformule ainsi la figure du commanditaire ou du peintre dessinant logé dans les tableaux anciens. Sous ses yeux, sous notre regard, se déploie maintenant l'ordre aux dehors équilibrés des entrelacs décoratifs de sphères et d'orbites (la structure interne !) coexistant avec les natures mortes de verres brisés ou de monnaies répandues à flots (le spectacle, les réalités profondes !).
S'engage dès lors dans l'oeuvre d'Urs Lüthi, à la formalité toujours tendue, aux harmoniques intellectuelles et affectives subtiles et amples, la phase de la Global Presence (qui est dans l'air du temps). Le XXIe siècle est en vue. La mondialisation autorise (presque) tous les slogans et pourquoi pas celui de Art is the better life ? Pour preuve, à l'ère des Placebos & Surrogates (selon la nouvelle appellation générale de ses travaux), l'artiste produit de très efficaces tableaux photographiques, colorés, abstraits et trivialement concrets, accumulant truismes et formules passe-partout (en anglais universel) où surnage vaguement un mot-titre. Un disque blanc troue le centre de ces compositions conçues comme autant de supports de méditation zen à vocation (parodiquement) thérapeutique: Concentrate on the white circle for five minutes daily, suggère une phrase en pied. En trente années, depuis l'époque où il assurait qu'il pleure aussi pour vous, Urs Lüthi n'a pas perdu le sens des aphorismes, interpellations et bonnes paroles ironiquement charismatiques. Aussi peut-il à bon droit réintroduire dans le circuit de la consommation artistique ses propres images juvéniles comme autant de Trademarks ayant rang de placebos et de substituts (on a vu ces «marques déposées» en 2001 à la Biennale de Venise).
Certes, Urs Lüthi ne tire plus la langue comme en 1973. Mais, souriant, bedonnant, en short et lunettes professorales, il court sans fin sur un tapis roulant de sport en chambre et nous lance, à la faveur d'une vidéo aussi drôle que philosophique: Run for your life. Sauve qui peut (la vie) ! Ce n'est pas le dernier pied de nez d'une invention de soi-même et du monde douée d'une cohérence et d'une actualité sans pareille. L'art d'Urs Lüthi est l'histoire d'une vie, une histoire de l'art centrée sur la dérision et la signification. Osons le souligner (rmm).
